The famous web-slinger is one of the most iconic characters in pop-culture. Peter Parker has been in countless cartoons, plenty of comic books (main series, cross-overs, spin-offs, etc.), movies, and video games. There’s even an amusement park in Florida with a Spider-Man ride. While we know so much about Peter Parker, what about other spider-heroes in the comics? There’s Mile Morales, Spider-Man 2099, Spider-Ham, Spider-Man Noir, Spider-Man 2099, Silk, and my personal favorite, Spider-Gwen.
We’ve seen Spider-Man Noir and Spider-Man 2099 in the fantastic Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions. It’s the best game with the web-crawler to be released in the past decade, and that includes his appearances in fighting games. A lot of these characters also were included in LEGO: Marvel Superheroes 2 as well. Insomniac Games have created some of my favorite games including Ratchet & Clank and Sunset Overdrive. The team is excellent when it comes to combat, traversal, and open-world gameplay.
Each spider-related hero in the Marvel universe has unique personalities that would mesh well in a video game. While powers are slightly the same, there are some variations between characters, timelines, and motivations to help others. Some of the members of their respective “rogues gallery” may occasionally differ as well. Having video games based on Spider-Gwen, Silk, Spider-Man 2099, or even Venom would be a welcome inclusion to the PlayStation catalog because it’s something different.
Insomniac’s Spider-Man aims to take what people love about the character and put it in a robust, lively environment. From the 20 minutes I was able to play of the game, I couldn’t stop smiling. Everything that made me love the character growing up was on full display. Wouldn’t it be fantastic for other popular characters to get the spotlight?
Sony is known for making sequels to their heavy hitting games. There have been three mainline Uncharted sequels from Naughty Dog as well as a side game. Insomniac developed two sequels in the Resistance franchise and a few sequels in the Ratchet & Clank series. It’s worth noting that the God of War franchise is still going strong and Naughty Dog will be releasing The Last Of Us: Part 2 in the future. While there are plenty of new IPs in Sony’s catalog, sequels keep fans coming back for more.
The Marvel universe is the perfect place to experiment with characters that people who don’t read comic books will be interested in learning about. How many people know about Silk, Spider-Gwen, Spider-Ham, Miles Morales, and Spider-Man 2099? Introducing the public to some of these characters not only open the door to new video games but also different shows and comics as well.
Having an exclusive superhero game is a big deal. Sony definitely has a hit on their hands, but I wonder what these means for the future of the brand. Spider-Man can be the beginning of a beautiful partnership between Marvel and Sony. The Spider-Man universe is rich with so many stellar characters, and I think they deserve the time to shine. While a sequel starring Peter Parker seems like the likely way to proceed with the franchise, Sony can benefit from taking chances with the IP they’ve been given.
